I am at work
carving red abalone for necklace designs 4 woman and abalone pendant's 4 men. I start with raw abalone and when necessary,
cut and shape abalone pieces, then tumble and finish with polish buffer. Abalone finishes like glass. Many colors, like God's
rainbow, and more beautiful then Opals, harder and larger and I think more valuable.
Abalone is NOT so soft. It is harder then opal. I rarely break a piece of abalone I drill.
21 years! Abalone shapes and colors are amazing! I try to use the shape I find it in on the beach, in the design we make.
This is our identity. Totally unique designs never repeatable as is. Just like God's sunrise. That is why we were chosen
to represent the USA in the Art Museum in Washington, D.C. They never saw Abalone Jewelry like ours any place in the world.
They liked big unique Abalone Necklaces,and they exhibited and sold them at the Renwick Gallery of the Museum!
I found many abalone pieces on beaches of N. California while I was in
a street ministry for Jesus Christ. I lived in my Van and woke early before anyone was up on the streets. It was at this early
hour I climbed down cliffs off the coast of Mendocino to beach comb. I woke the seagulls up! I searched 27 years ago in 1980's.
Abalone is the most beautiful shell in world. Most rare, and valuable! The Chumash used it as a barter payment for goods and
services from other tribes.
